Sleep Apnea Treatment
How is sleep apnea treated? Commonly, this sleep disorder can be treated with the lifestyle changes or behavioral treatments. And for the serious case, medication is the best way. But what is sleep apnea? Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that characterized by breathing pauses. The pauses may occur for several times. It happens during the night. If it leaves without treatment, this sleep disorder may become more serious. Even it can lead the sufferers to the other diseases as well.
Sleep apnea is a kind of a behavioral problem. For this, doctors recommend non-medication treatments first. Lifestyle changes is one of the most important treatments here. Based on the research, obesity has the strong connection with sleep apnea. Even a little weight loss will give the good benefit for people with this sleep problem. Beside it, try to avoid alcohol and medicine, especially medicines that allow you to sleep. Alcohol and medicines will make your throat to stay open. As the result, it will worsen the snoring and the sleep apnea.
While you are getting sleep, try to sleep on your side, not your back. Sleep on your side will keep the throat to stay opened. You can use a special pillows for this. Allergy medicine and nasal sprays will help people to keep the nasal passages open. But make sure to consult to the doctor before taking the treatment. And if you smoke, you have to quit.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
CPAP has been known as one of the most popular sleep apnea treatment. This is also effective to treat this sleep disorder. CPAP works by keeping the airway open during the sleep. But you have to wear a mask for this. For the beginning, it will be difficult to get sleep with this device on your mouth and nose. You may wakeful. But after a few days, you will get used to it. The other side effects of CPAP include dry or stuffy nose. Some people may have dry mouth, irritated skin and headache as well. If you experience it, consult it to the sleep specialist, CPAP technician or the doctor. They will help you to reduce the side effects.
Medication and Surgery
Actually, doctors will not suggest people to treat sleep apnea with medicines. But they help people to stay awake during the day. If you get medicine to reduce daytime sleepiness, you have to combine it with CPAP treatment. With the medicine, you can stay awake in the day. And thanks to CPAP, you can reduce the number of the breathing pauses.
In the more serious case, the normal treatment is not enough to reduce the sleep problem. If that so, surgery is the only way. But the type of surgery is depending on the cause of the sleep apnea. The effectiveness of the surgery is also depending on it. Surgery usually involves stiffening, shrinking or removing the excess tissue in the throat and the mouth. But anyway, surgery did not recommend to children. For children, intranasal corticosteroid medicine and CPAP is much safer. This is how is sleep apnea treated.
